Playing GTA Online with a Crew: Joining a Friend and Splitting the Money
To play GTA Online with a friend, you first need to be on the same platform and the same version of the game: there is no crossplay between PlayStation, Xbox and PC. Then one of you creates an invite-only session and invites the other from the pause menu. In a heist, the leader pays the setup costs and sets the cuts, with a minimum of 15% per player on Cayo Perico; some recent heists instead pay crew members a fixed amount.
Can you play with a friend on another console?
No. In 2026, GTA Online is still locked by platform. A PlayStation player cannot join an Xbox or PC player, and vice versa. Rockstar has announced no change on this.
Two situations often catch out players who own the same brand of machine:

How do you join a friend or invite them?
- Create your own session. In the pause menu, Online tab, choose "Find New Session", then "Invite Only Session". You will be alone in the session.
- Invite your friend. Still in the pause menu, open your friends list and send an invite. You can also go through the console's friends list or the Rockstar launcher on PC.
- Accept the invite. Your friend joins your session. If they are still in Story Mode, the game moves them online.
- For a heist. The leader starts the finale from their base (Kosatka, Mansion, Arcade) and sends the invite from the planning board.

Why can't my friend and I join each other?
If you are on the same platform and it still fails, check these in order:
- The game version. On PC, one of you may be on Legacy and the other on Enhanced. On console, one of you may have launched the PS4 or Xbox One version out of habit.
- The update. A player who has not installed the latest update cannot join players who have.
- Privacy. Console or account settings can block invites or joining friends' games.
- The connection. A very restrictive home network (strict NAT, for example) sometimes stops two players from connecting directly. Your console's support pages explain how to check this setting.
How are heist payouts split?
There is no single rule. Each heist has its own, and the leader always covers the upfront cost (setup fees, preps).

Why does only the leader get paid in some missions?
Because some activities are built around the owner. For business sales, the owner collects the sale; the people helping mostly do it out of friendship or to get help in return. Several recent heists work the same way, with a fixed amount for crew members. The simplest approach among friends: take turns running your own heists and sales, and the others help. Everyone ends up being leader in turn.
Do the weekly bonuses go only to the leader?
Since update 1.73, 13 heists pay more on their first completion of the week, with a reset on Thursday (patch notes relayed by GTABase). What is unclear is whether this bonus benefits the whole crew or only the leader on their own first completion. The guides we consulted do not state it reliably. Before you plan your week around it, look at each player's end screen on your first run together.
Does playing as a group pay more than solo?
Often yes, mostly because of cooldowns. On both Cayo Perico and the Kortz Center, a finale played as a group only triggers a 48-minute wait, compared with 144 minutes solo (GTA BOOM, GameRant). As a group, you also carry more bags, and some rooms only open with two players, like the Crisp gallery in the Kortz Center. The downside: the payout gets shared. Where can you find teammates?
- Forums. GTANF, a French-language forum, has a thread dedicated to finding heist teammates. The French-language jeuxvideo.com forums also regularly have "looking for players" threads, sorted by platform.
- Discord servers dedicated to GTA, including French-language ones: look for servers with a channel for your platform and clear rules.
- The "Find Players" option in a heist invites strangers. It is fast, but the drop-out rate is high.
How do you avoid failed runs with strangers?
This is the number one frustration for new players: three evenings in a row without finishing a heist. A few rules change everything:
- Pick a short, well-known heist to start, like the Fleeca Job with two players.
- Agree on the plan before the finale: who does what, which entry, stealth or not.
- Play with a mic, or at least with players who read the chat.
- Prefer regular teammates: a group of two or three reliable players beats ten strangers.

FAQ
Can you play GTA Online between PS5 and Xbox, or between console and PC?
No. GTA Online has no crossplay between PlayStation, Xbox and PC. Even on PC, the Enhanced and Legacy editions have separate sessions.
Can a PS4 player play with a friend on PS5?
Only if the PS5 player launches the PS4 version of the game. The PS4 and PS5 versions each have their own sessions, and the same applies between Xbox One and Xbox Series.
What is the minimum a crew member gets on Cayo Perico?
Each player gets at least 15% of the take. The leader sets the rest of the cuts before the finale.
Do first-completion-of-the-week bonuses go only to the leader?
Published sources do not settle this clearly. The bonus is tied to the first completion of each heist in the week; check every player's end-of-mission screen before drawing conclusions.
