How to Start GTA Online in 2026 (and How to Come Back After a Break)

To get off to a good start in GTA Online in 2026, play on PS5, Xbox Series X|S or PC Enhanced, use the Career Builder (4 million to start, once per account), then chain two activities that cost nothing: the Cluckin' Bell Farm Raid and the First Dose missions that give you the Acid Lab. Play in an invite-only session so you can sell in peace, and do not buy a single car until you have two sources of income.
Is it still worth starting GTA Online in 2026?
Yes, for three concrete reasons.
- The game is still alive. Rockstar posts new bonuses every Thursday, and the last big expansion, the Kortz Center Heist, came out on July 14, 2026.
- GTA VI does not replace GTA Online right away. GTA VI launches on November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and Take-Two has said GTA Online will keep being supported after that launch. An online mode for GTA VI has no official date.
- New players are treated better than before. The Career Builder skips the broke first hours everyone went through before 2022.
The only real limit: what you buy in GTA Online will not carry over to GTA VI, as far as we know on September 23, 2026 (there has been no official announcement saying otherwise). Play it because you enjoy it now, not as an investment.
Which version should you play?
Pick the current version: PS5, Xbox Series X|S or PC Enhanced. The Career Builder and the GTA+ membership are only offered on those versions. The PS4 and Xbox One versions still work, but without those perks.
If you own the game on PS4, the PS5 version has been free since June 18, 2026, disc or digital. On Xbox, only the digital Xbox One version qualifies for the free upgrade, according to Game Informer. Your progress can come with you: the steps are in our guide to transferring your character.
How do you use the Career Builder?
When you create a character, the game offers you one of four careers: Executive (CEO), Gunrunner, Nightclub Owner or Biker. You then get 4,000,000 GTA$ to spend on a property, vehicles and weapons. You can only keep 1,000,000 GTA$ for later. Rockstar Support states that the offer is available only once per account.
The pick that comes up most in guides is the Gunrunner (a Bunker that produces while you do other things). Avoid spending the budget on cars. We break down the options and the buying order that follows in what to buy first in GTA Online.
What should you do on your first evening?
Here is a simple plan that takes two or three hours depending on how comfortable you are.
- Finish the tutorial and the Career Builder. Do not skip the first missions: they unlock contacts.
- Set up the game: aim assist if you play on a controller, subtitles, and start straight into an invite-only session from the online settings if your version offers it.
- Start the Cluckin' Bell Farm Raid: head to the Vespucci police station. Six missions, playable alone, no purchase needed. According to Timesaver (September 10, 2026), the finale pays 600,000 GTA$ the first time each week, 400,000 after that, plus one-time bonuses of 250,000 GTA$.
- Start Dax's First Dose missions at the Freakshop. They give you the Acid Lab truck. The setup then costs 750,000 GTA$ according to up-to-date guides.
- Keep the rest of your money for your next purchase: the Agency or the Kosatka.
Public, invite-only or solo session: which one should you pick?
To make money in peace, an invite-only session is the best choice. Since The Criminal Enterprises update in July 2022, every business activity, sales included, is allowed in invite-only, friend or crew sessions. So you no longer risk losing a sale because of another player.
| Session type | What it is for | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Public | Meeting people, races, events | Hostile players during sales |
| Invite-only | Sales, preps, solo heists | No random teammates |
| Friends or crew | Group heists without strangers | You need a team |
Some sales give a small bonus when the session has other players in it. That bonus is rarely worth the risk when you are just starting.
Are low stats (stamina, shooting, driving) a real handicap?
A little, during the first hours: you run out of breath faster and your aim is less steady. But every stat goes up through normal play. Running, driving and shooting during the missions that pay is enough. There is no need for separate training sessions, which pay you nothing.
How do you make your first millions without spending every evening on it?
Here are the activities open to a beginner, with what they pay according to sources dated 2026.
| Activity | What you need | Reported payout | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cluckin' Bell Raid | Nothing | 600,000 GTA$ (first of the week), 400,000 after that | Timesaver, Sept. 10, 2026 |
| Upgraded Acid Lab | First Dose missions, 1,000,000 GTA$ for setup and upgrade | 335,000 to 352,000 GTA$ per full stock | Timesaver, Sept. 12, 2026 |
| Dr. Dre contract | An Agency (from 2,010,000 GTA$) | 900,000 GTA$, 1,099,800 the first time each week | GTA Boss, 2026 |
| Payphone Hits | An Agency and the Dr. Dre contract completed | 15,000 GTA$ plus a 30,000 bonus for the leader | GTA Boss, July 13, 2026 |
| Cayo Perico solo | A Kosatka (2,200,000 GTA$) | Primary target from 400,000 to 910,000 GTA$ in normal mode, plus secondary loot | GTA BOOM, Aug. 17, 2026 |
A realistic pace for a player with one hour a night: one Cluckin' Bell Raid the first week, the Acid Lab running in the background, then the Agency or the Kosatka. To choose based on the time you have, see what to do in GTA Online in 30, 60 or 120 minutes, and for the full ranking of methods, making money solo.
I am coming back after several years: what has changed?
- Sales in private sessions have been allowed since 2022. It is the biggest quality-of-life change.
- New businesses: the Agency (2021), the Acid Lab (2022), the Salvage Yard, the Bail Office, the car wash and the Mansions (December 2025).
- Heist payouts changed on July 14, 2026: Cayo Perico pays less, and thirteen heists or mission series now give a bonus for the first completion of the week. The "Cayo on repeat" habit is no longer the only good choice.
- The week starts on Thursday: that is the day of the new bonuses and the reset of weekly bonuses.
Which mistakes cost beginners the most?
- Buying a car before a business. The fun can wait two weeks.
- Selling in a public session a stock that took hours to produce.
- Buying three businesses at once without the time to empty them.
- Following a guide from before July 2026: the Cayo Perico numbers it gives are wrong today.
- Buying money or a "boosted" account from a third-party site: Rockstar forbids it and the account can be penalized.
How do you go further?
This guide covers the first week. For what comes next, the ebook The WantedWise Playbook goes through this path in detail: the Career Builder and the first hours, then the first five purchases by budget and routines for 30, 60 or 120 minutes. If you would rather have someone guide your start, 1v1 coaching is also available.
FAQ
Is it too late to start GTA Online in 2026?
No. The game still gets weekly updates, the last big expansion came out on July 14, 2026, and Take-Two has said GTA Online will keep being supported after GTA VI launches. Starting now even has an advantage: the Career Builder gives you 4 million to begin with.
Can you play GTA Online alone?
Yes. Most profitable activities can be done alone, including Cayo Perico, the Kortz Center, the Cluckin' Bell Raid and the Dr. Dre contract. Since July 2022, you can also sell goods in an invite-only session, with no other players around.
Should you start on PS4 or PS5?
On PS5 if you can. The Career Builder and GTA+ only exist on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC Enhanced. Since June 18, 2026, the PS5 version is free for owners of the PS4 version.
Are low stats a big handicap?
A little at the start, especially stamina and shooting, but they go up on their own as you play. Do not waste time training them separately: they improve while you do the missions that pay.
