How to Transfer Your GTA Online Character: PS4 to PS5, Xbox to PS5, PC
Yes, you can transfer your GTA Online character from a PS4 to a PS5 or from an Xbox One to an Xbox Series X|S, and even from an older console to the other family (PS4 to Xbox Series, Xbox One to PS5). The migration happens only once per account, from the game menu on the new console. However, you cannot move from PS5 to Xbox Series (or the reverse), or from a console to PC.

How do you get the PS5 or Xbox Series version for free?
On PS5
According to Push Square (June 18, 2026):
- digital PS4 version: open the game page on your PS5 and choose to download the PS5 version, at no cost;
- PS4 disc version: insert the disc into a PS5 with a disc drive, let it install, then download the PS5 version from the game page. The disc has to stay in the console every time you play.
On Xbox Series X|S
Only the digital Xbox One version qualifies for the free upgrade. According to GINX (June 2026), the Xbox One disc version does not, because of platform limitations. If you own the Xbox One disc, your character can still migrate: you then need to buy the Xbox Series X|S version from an official store.
On PC
Owners of the Legacy edition can move to the Enhanced edition at no cost, according to Game Informer (June 17, 2026).
How do I migrate my character, step by step?
- Check your Rockstar account. The old and new consoles must be linked to the same Rockstar Games account (Social Club). For a family switch (PlayStation to Xbox or the reverse), link both platform accounts to that same Rockstar account.
- Launch GTA Online on the new console. The first time you connect, the game offers to migrate your profile. Choose the profile from the old console that you want to bring over.
- If you skipped the message, the profile migration option is in the pause menu, under the Online tab, according to Rockstar Actu.
- Read the confirmation screen before you confirm: it shows what will be carried over. The migration is final.
What gets transferred, and what does not?

If you have purchased GTA$ in reserve and plan to switch families, spend it before you migrate.
What does "profile transfer" mean in GTA Online?
It is the name of the menu that starts the migration. The term is misleading: it is a one-time copy, not a sync. According to Rockstar Actu, the two versions are no longer linked after the transfer: what you earn later on the new console will not show up on the old one, and vice versa. On PS4, the migrated profile is no longer available after it has been transferred to PS5.
Do not confuse it with the Career Builder, which creates a new character with 4 million to start, once per account, on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC Enhanced. How do you move from PC Legacy to PC Enhanced?
In the Enhanced edition, open GTA Online, then the pause menu, Online tab: the profile migration option is there. According to Rockstar Support and Gamepressure, this migration:
- can only be done once and cannot be undone;
- does not delete your character on the Legacy edition;
- is not synced afterwards: the two characters progress separately.
The migration option does not show up: what should you do?
- Check that it is the same Rockstar account on both consoles. This is the most common cause.
- Check that you have not already migrated this account, even a long time ago (during the first wave, in 2022).
- New or flagged account: Rockstar Actu says accounts created less than 30 days ago and accounts flagged for cheating or modding cannot migrate. Confirm this with support.

What should you do right after migrating?
- Take stock. Open the properties app on your in-game phone and note what you own: Bunker, Nightclub, Kosatka, Agency. Many returning players have forgotten part of what they own.

- Restart your businesses, which are often idle for lack of supplies after a long break.
- See what has come out since you left: the Acid Lab, the Cluckin' Bell Raid, the Mansions, the Kortz Center.
Should you migrate now, before GTA VI?
If you still play on PS4 or Xbox One, yes, for a simple reason: the current version gives you access to GTA+ and better performance, and the upgrade has been free since June 2026. The end of GTA Online support on PS4 and Xbox One is circulating as a rumor, but Rockstar had not confirmed it as of September 23, 2026.
